SRT vs VTT — and when you need each
SRT (SubRip) is the most common subtitle format and works with virtually every desktop video player and editing tool. VTT (WebVTT) is the format the web uses — if you're adding captions to an HTML5 video, a website, or many streaming platforms, you'll usually need VTT. The two are almost identical, with one key difference: SRT separates seconds and milliseconds with a comma, while VTT uses a period and adds a WEBVTT header.
